Kierra Parlagrecomy nano to After Effects workflow
by on May 31, 2010 at 11:32:38 pm

I spent a lot of time looking for information on a good workflow for shooting with the nanoflash and then working with the footage (greenscreen ftg) in After Effects. I never found such a workflow model so I created one of my own and thought I'd share it here.

We shot on the Sony EX-3 camera, recording to the regular SxS cards in addition to the nanoflash unit. The settings we used for the nano was MXF, 180 mbps, iFrame.

After the shoot I opened my SxS footage in the EX Clip Browser and opened the various nanoflash files in the VLC media viewer. I compared each shot this way and using the EX Clip Browser I entered the name of the nano clip file in the "TITLE 2" line for each SxS clip.

Then in the Avid, I used AMA along with the SxS "low res" clips to create my edit. Then I did a match frame and find bin for each clip. Once I was in the bin I could see the name of the corresponding nano file. I then imported that file and match cut it back into my sequence.

I then exported the nano clips using the DNxHD 200 codec. I brought all the individual clips into After Effects and did my keying and effects work there.

The reason I didn't just import all my nano clips and edit from those is that I had way too much footage and would have run out of drive space.

After Effects CS5 should be able to read the nano clips natively, soon. However, I use Primatte to pull my keys and that is not available for AE CS5 yet.

Not sure if any one is in the exact same situation as me but thought this could possibly help someone out there. Also, if anyone has any tips for something I could have done more efficiently I welcome that feedback!!!

Thanks!
