HD-Connect MI and Final Cut Pro for HDV->HDMI

I own the HD-Connect MI, but have rarely used it because every time I try to make it work, I wind up running out of time, and just revert back to my standard workflow, which is actually pretty good (either DV/HDV/Kona 8-bit/ProRes422).

Does anyone know of a good step-by-step guide to setting up the HD-Connect MI with Final Cut/Kona LHe? I'm not talking about the manual! I have that and it isn't solving my problem.

I have a fast dual core Mac Pro, Kona LHe, Sony HDV deck (M25U), the latest firmware for the HD-Connect MI. I just can't seem to get it to work reliably. It captures a couple of seconds and then reports trouble with the tape.
