Re: Other codec's for Flash XDR?

Hi Pekka,
The Flash XDR only has the ability to compress to MPEG2. The MPEG2 CODEC we use is an ASIC (hard coded chip). It is necessary to use an ASIC to reduce size and power. Implementing MPEG2 in a programmable chip takes more space and uses about 5X the power (not to mention extra cost).
We see MPEG2 as a "jack of all trades" due to the scalability of the bitrate and native compatibility with numerous NLEs using MXF or Quicktime file formats. Also, MPEG2 in long-GOP mode is 3-4X better quality than I-frame CODECs at the same bitrate.
Everything of course involves trade offs, but looking at the quality (comparisons available on our website) that MPEG2 is capable of at higher bitrates, compatibility with NLEs, power and size of the CODEC, and availability, it was the best choice in our eyes.
Regards,
