The fstab file permissions are correct. You should not change those.
I'd be looking at /Volumes before the mount (and during the failure) to see what directories are there.
I suspect you'll either see an empty directory (ie it didn't mount because there was a irectory there already) or you'll see a directory that only root (or someone else) can access. If you "umount" that directory, you will see the empty mount point. Check the permissions on that.
