thanks guys - I will try this when I am back at the client.

I actually attempted to copy the locked file onto a USB key to play with this at home, and when I did this, the file copied and unlocked. This is how I discovered that if simply move the file off the drive volume, and then drag it back onto the same volume, it is now unlocked. That's why this is so strange to me.
