Big Project--One capture scratch or multiple?

Working on a seven part network series. Probably will have over 7TB of footage. I've got three or four terabytes in one capture scratch, and I'm noticing the XSAN really having issues with accessing the data. I get a lot of 5-10 second beach balls...
The entire project was shot p2 HD 24PN...5.9MB/s (pretty small), and there's no multiclipping, Just a little stacking of vid tracks too (1 usually 3 at the most, then back to 1).
Have I done something wrong here, or is this just the size of the project?
