I am not quite believing what I am reading; I thought the whole point of a video SAN was the media stayed on the SAN and the clients all played it at the same time. What is the point of it otherwise?

What sort of collaborative workflow is copying the media locally and using it?

I would say that's a bigger pain than dealing with Avid's media databases - which do all the work for you ;-)
