Greg Foremanscene size and hair

Hello. I'm quite new to 3ds max so I ended up making my scene massive, as in the room is about 2500M high.

This isn't a problem apart from I want hair on 2 characters, and the 100 max scale doesn't display any hair at all.

I've grouped my scene and shrunk it small enough for the hair to display. Trouble is, I have some HD solvers that have messed up as a result (the IK solvers managed the translation okay). Even when I create new bones for the rig I have the same problem (the character is very small - like a mouse).

I have heard about using splines for hair length. This would be great for one of the characters, but the other is best suited as the default ball of fuzz without any desired direction for the hairs.

What do you think would be the best way for me to tack this problem?
