running 3dsmax and/or Maya

Hi all,

I have just started university doing special fx degree, since I plan to go down the cg route eventually i am keen to get going on some of the programs. I have been advised to practice 3ds max and maya, along with zbrush?

What kind of spec pc can i expect to be able to use these programs on a learning basis, since we have render farms at uni etc.

I currently run a simple system, dual core amd64, 2gb Ram,asus standard gfx card. If i under get a new gfx card what shud i get bearing in mind my student status.

any help is most appreciated.thanks, Lorraine
