You could create a QUAD PATCH object so that it covers the entire map object....then make sure that the map is intersecting the quad patch, then use the map object as the cutter in a ProBoolean operation...use the intersect option and you should be left with a map that is all quads. You can then bend this and modify it however you wish without any of the distortion issues you're having now. If you need a thickness on it, you can either add a Shell modifyer or convert it to an editable poly and extrude the polygons up. good luck
