Rookie question: how to add a tree to the plant library?

Hi-
I'm wondering if the .3ds model files of trees I downloaded online can be added into the foliage "plant library" (which has many transformation options with it) or if my only option is to import them as individual models. I am trying to build a better foliage library. BTW, I am in 3ds Max 9.
Many thanks,
Susan
