I use the FS100 which can do P2 or Quicktime so my workflow is different if I use P2 format.

But I always but the footage on 1 separate drives before you it.

If I use the Quicktime method I just bring in the footage into a FCP bin and then rename the files in the bin to be more helpful to know what the clip is if there are a lot of clips.

The nice thing about shooting P2 is that you do a traditional Logging step where you name clips enter info if you like and set In and Outs so only what you really want is brought in. Of course this takes time which is why some people like and use the QT format which is drag and drop. There is no right or wrong here just different paths.

On the JVC I don't know what it is writing so in the end my only recommendation is to always backup the footage, always.
