The one constant of this business is change. We are in the midst of many transitions and our clients don't really care, but we have to. My goal this year was to go tapeless and in that regard, I was about to buy the FS4 HD model until I realized that the buffer was good but there was NO way to absolutely know if my files were being created other than the running TC numbers in the display. Then I discovered from another list that FLASH drives were due to make an impact on the HDV and DVCproHD market. I waited, and behold a few days later Sony announced its HVR MRC1 directly attached to its newest line of HDV camcorders, the HVR Z7U and the HVR 270.
I'm mostly an event videographer, but shoot Steadicam with a modified SK2 model and I doubt the firewire connections on any drive, be it a FLASH or FS 4, will be perfect every time in every situation to be used for PRIMARY recording media. But if spinning drives are any indication, its obvious to me that they are on the way out and that some sort of SS media will soon replace them. My Sony V1U will have to be fed tape until I feel better about the options I have to record and go tapeless this year.
