As with everything else in life there are pros and cons to this.
Yes with v3 you can choose QT format and you by pass the P2 format/import altogether. Your clips are ready to be copied and imported directly into FCP. The con to this is there are no spanned clips so each clips is the 2 GB limit so if you shoot for an hour you have tons of clips. The pro to this is there are no spanned clips, this seems to cause issue with the clips in the past. Seems like must of this has been worked out.
If you are shooting a lot of footage that has a lot of dead stuff that you really don't need on your system P2 import is fine and logging is so helpful on projects with a lot of footage.
Options are always good and as long as you think through which works best for you it is a definite improvement.
