However, the fan in the FS-4 is so loud that my use of it is really restricted to loud events or photography that does not involve getting near the audio source..

I think you need to send your unit back to Focus for a look see. Our FS4Pro is silent, no fan noise. I have to put my ear to the housing to hear it running. You may have a glitched unit.
