compression question

I know that I can apply dynamic range compression to an audio file that has already been recorded using garage band (or other recording software). I want to know if garage band has a function that applies compression on the input side - in other words, can it compress a live vocal input before it is recorded? I can use an outboard hardware compressor for this, but can I pre compress the signal using the garage band software only?
Thanks
