I use the Griffin imic, (mostly for transferring old vinyl) it should retail about 30 bucks. It does the job, but it's really the bare minimum, and is not all that rugged so if you're serious at all about this stuff, you'll have to drop about $300 for an external interface box. Some of these are pretty nifty; they include a MIDI keyboard (one or two octaves), a MIDI-in for other devices, audio inputs and preamps, then USB out to the mac.
