Thanks for the reply, Gene.
The noise seems to come from the area of the fan. I can hear the drive spin up and it sounds normal. At the moment the fan is quiet as well.
Thing is, I leave the drive and my system powered up almost all the time. In the past 6mnths dust had gathered in the fan, which I believe made it noisy. I disconnected the drive and gave it a burst of canned air, reconnected to the system and powered up. The fan still seemed noisy at first, and that is when it started making the wild motor spin noises. I was able to replicate the same symptoms for a few times in a row, then decided not to invite trouble and have left it powered on and mounted since then.
Now the fan is noticeably quieter, still just a little buzz but I can live with it.
I'll give you guys a ring anyway to get your opinion. Thanks again.
