Audio problem with DVDIt

I'm having a problem with the audio on DVDIt produced DVDs. I use Premiere 6.5 to produce videos of my kids' sports teams with background music. They sound great in Premiere. If I output them as an AVI or MPG file to disk, they sound great on the computer. When I add them as media in DVDIt they still sound great, even in the DVD simulator. However, once I actually create the DVD and play it back on any set-top player, the audio isn't right.
It's hard to explain, but I'll try. The audio sounds "thin". The lead vocals are are down in volume as are some of the drums and bass, but the backup vocals and some instruments are very prominent. It reminds me of a device we used at a radio station at which I worked in 1981. We had a device that reversed one of the stereo channels and then mixed it with the other channel 180 degrees out of phase, producing a mono output. Since the lead vocal is usually recorded equally on both channels, mixing the out of phase signals together cancelled out the "center", leaving just the background. It was sort of the beginning of karaoke where we could then make novelty records.
I usually feed DVDIt an MP2 file with PCM audio. It insists on transcoding something anyway (I think the audio). I've prepared the MPEG in the Adobe (MainConcept) encoder. I've also tried Tmpegenc with the same result. If I feed DVDIt the AVI and let it transcode, same thing.
This is the first year for this brand new computer and video is all it does. I used my old desktop last year and had the same software combination. It had the same audio problem.
Sorry for the long message, but this has been bugging me for quite some time. I've tried everything I know and nothing helps.
