[Stephen Smith] "f it’s just a photo or a clip and you drag the “photo” from your File Browser to a different photo on the timeline the arrow will turn into a hook shaped arrow. When you let go of the mouse the name of the original photo will change to the new one in the timeline."

Yessir, that is what I am doing. The only thing different (and I will confirm this as soon as my machine is done rendering) is that I am dragging my photo directly from a finder window onto the layer in the timeline. Little hooked arrow, yes, layer name changes to the new photo name, no.

I will post back in a few after my machine is done chugging away, trash my prefs and try it in a new project.
