you are looking to make the most money (so you want to find the best niche to get into) - right ?

The people who make the MOST money are the people with the most friends. They are the ones who have the most clients - they are not the best editors, they are not the best graphics artists, they are not the best audio mixers, but DAMN THEM, they have all these clients, and they are not even that good. People choose their FRIENDS to work with. So if you are graphics artist, and your friend goes to work for a production company, and they need a graphics artist - he will hire YOU, instead of "the top guy" in town, because he likes you, and want's to hire you instead of "Mr. Big".

You see this all the way up - as you become a big shot, you invite heads of ad agencies out to dinner, or your summer house. Now, you may not be the best, but your new "friend" loves you, and will send work to you, instead of the guy more qualified that you. Unfortunately, you will see just the opposite, if "no one" knows you - you may be the BEST MAYA artist, or 3D animator, and you won't be able to find a job, when some idiot that can barely do anything is making all this money !

Do whatever you enjoy doing, develop your skills, but HANG OUT with people - particularly clients or future employers. Go to their stupid parties, invite them out for drinks, or if they are all meeting at a bar, go hang out there and have a beer. Become their friends. Small talk about this amazing thing you worked out in After Effects - they will be interested, and all of a sudden, they will want to see your reel - when last week, they would not even take your phone call.

This is real life. This is the game. You can't be brilliant, and a dark, shy little person. If you are, you will eventually find a job, and your employer will pay you your little salary, while he earns a fortune from your fantastic abiilties. Be nice to people, even if it kills you.

If you follow these rules, you will find that you can succeed at anything you enjoy doing.
