John,
Quality audio requires taking the time to make it right ... I think the problem you are having is due to the original MP 3 file and not Audition ... Unlike other file types audio isn't a click point and shoot ... Sorry you feel Audition has not lived up to it's rep ... In the 9 years I have been using Audition I have found there isn't much that it can't do but then I am willing to spend hours on a 5 minute clip if that is what is required ... Good luck to you ...
