Hi Simon,
Unfortunately, while the record date and other metadata is in the original HDV transport stream, once it's been captured to a QuickTime movie that metadata has been stripped out and so CatDV can't display it.
If you capture an .m2t transport stream CatDV will display the metadata from it, but that won't play in QuickTime without conversion. The simplest solution if you just want to catalog your tapes and create low-res proxies is to set your deck to downconvert to DV and catalog those files, but you'd then need to recapture the clips as HDV for full-res editing.
