Hi Phil,
If it's H.264 then it is not HDV. HDV is MPEG2. H.264 is not a great format with which to edit on your MacBook Pro. It takes a lot of processing power. That is probably why things are sluggish. You might consider trans-coding to Pros422 using Compressor. If it's only eight minutes that shouldn't take up too much space and you won't loose any quality. Best of luck.
