Its quite possible part of the tape was skewed to start with and recorded off center and when rewound came back into alignment, this can happen in shipment or storage where part of the tape is packed to one side, also possible there was something on the capstan or pinch roller, or one of the tape guides, retensioning new tapes prior to use can take care of most problems like this.
