More playback issues, now with M35

Hi, I posted the following a couple of days ago, and have now tried the m35 deck and have the same result.
Hello, I've just received some tapes back from a camera crew that is shooting in India. They shot HDV on the Canon HV20. When I loaded them in my deck I couldn't get an image when in normal play but did when I hit fast forward. I switched between 50i and 60i (in case it was an NTSC/PAL issue) with the same result. I also was told they might have shot in 24p so I tried them in a Sony HDV HVR VIU (which can handle 24p) and had the same result.
When the tape is in the m35u the hdv and 60i light up but there is still no image unless it is fast forwarding. I took it back to the rental place and we have spent the afternoon trying to figure it out. He is baffled as well.
The material on the tape is irreplaceable so does anyone have a suggestion on what we're doing wrong. Or is there a company/place where i can send these tapes off to get the footage off them? Thanx,.
