Converting HDV to DVCPRO HD in FCP Timeline for Shake Effects, etc.

For the project I'm currently working on (shot in HDV on the SONY Z1U, and edited in native in HDV in FCP), we were going to convert the picture-locked HDV timeline to DVCPRO HD, THEN do effects like color correction, Shake work, etc.
Our rationale to use this workflow is that doing effects on HDV material is less then ideal as it is not as robust a codec.
Can anyone confirm that this is the way to go.
Thanks,
Tom
