Yes, AVCHD is converted to AIC or ProRes on ingest. But over here at our German FCP-Forum there are still a lot of members reporting problems on ingest of AVCHD, while others say its working fine for them. So, try to rent the camera of your choice for a few days and test it.
Currently, AVCHD workflow is far from solid, but HDV started just like that in the first year.
