Hi Tim-
Nice job compressing the history of CODECs into one simple post! I can tell you that after years of designing and debugging JPEG, DV and now MPEG2 CODECs, they all can be a royal pain at times. But, I am still amazed that you can toss away 80% of the data and still reconstruct an image which is essentially indistinguishable from the original. Along with several other technical innovations, high-quality CODECs have been a key ingredient to our entire industry.
