Burning and playing Blu-ray discs requires a Blu-ray burner and player. Blu-ray, as the name implies, uses a finer wavelength blue laser. CD/DVD and HD DVD use red laser technology.
Blu-ray's narrower wavelength blue laser allows more data per layer to be stored on a disc versus HD DVD.
HD DVD leverages a lot of the existing technology of CD/DVD and is usually reflected in the price of the equipment and media.
