Dave, if there ever was a reason why Kona's or Decklink's were invented it's for this project. 720p converts very well to 1080i using the hardware- and it digitizes in real time with accurate repeatable TC.

You could also edit at 720p and bring the sony 1080i in as 720p but I hear that the conversion is not as clean.

Digitze it all as DVC Pro HD and smile. Okay it costs $1K or $1.5K but you'll have a pretty nice set up.
