Derek, you put the whole question of tapeless production into focus brilliantly! In theory it sounds wonderful but even when they can produce sensibly priced and sized discs I can't see a huge advantage. The BBC want it because they have editors all over the country who will be able to access marerial down the line whenever they want it.
We, however, have the media to hand and to say that discs will obviate the need to go through tapes digitizing is nonsense because we will still only want to have media on our computers that we actually think we'll need for that edit. All docu film makers shoot much too much and then sort out what they need when the editing starts. Won't that mean going through the discs and selecting? What's the difference from going through tapes? Media management is key with editing and it all has to be broken down into bins otherwise you don't know where you are, don't you agree?
