I don't know this from first hand experience but the Sony HVR-HC3 (I have this one) is slightly better in low light than the H1 it replaced (I don't have this one). I have a Z1 and use a light with it, only use the H3 professionally to cut in a few shots if enough light is present and I want to be unobtrusive. You can kick the gain up, but I would only do this for SD down converted shots.
