Yes, you are refering to the compression, I understand what is happening there. What I still can't get an answer on has to do with what occurs before the compression: the pre-filtering/sub-sampling process.

In HDCam every one agrees their sampling scheme generates a frame that would be considered as 3:1:1 based on some simple math. The 1080 standard has a line pixel rate of 1920. HDcam samples luminance at 1440. 1440 is 75 percent of 1920, 3 is 75 percent of 4. HDCam then samples the color channels at 480 pixels per line. 480 is 25 percent of 1920, 1 is 25 percent of 4. Therefore, 3:1:1.

My question is, why would I not apply the same logic to DVCProHD? Why, even though it also sub-samples, does DVCProHD get to be called 4:2:2?
