AAF support isn`t really greatly developed yet.

The best way to Avid => Smoke is EDL ... OR, if that works:

Avid => AAF => FCP => XML (by Managing Media if you have to bring the files with the project)

Then importing XML to Smoke works much more than AAF.

I got some issues with Fields or some crashes while importing XML to smoke, but most of the time, that works fine.
