Smoke - RS422 deck control

Hi,
we have just added a Smoke to our facility, and I'm encountering a problem with deck control...
Actually, lack of deck control.
The system belongs to an editor that we recently hired. He mentions that he's never controlled a deck via 422 before...
so...
The 9pin port is definitely labeled VTR (next to the serial port for the Wacom tablet)
The 422 cables are known good cables (have used them with Avid, deck to deck, etc)
The 422 routing is good, (can route control to Avid, FCP, Media 100, deck to deck)
The Smoke's interface always shows the VTR as "offline"
I get the same thing whether the smoke is connected to the 422 routing, or directly to the deck itself...
the .cfg file is set to use tty4 as the port...
I'm leaning towards a configuration issue of some sort.
Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction?
Somewhat familiar with Linux / Unix, so I should be able to find / edit the config files (if that's indeed what it is)
thanks!
Bill
