[Chris Blair] "I believe the gallery audio is controlled by the Windows sound control panel settings. Whereas the timeline audio is controlled by the Velocity sound control settings, which override the windows settings."

Brilliant! That fixed it. I don't even have speakers hooked up to the PC (it all comes through the Velocity card) so I never noticed that somehow the Windows volume control got muted.
