If you have Velocity systems, 6dB is about as high a boost as you want. On VelocityQ, 4dB is as high as you want to go. There are some differences in the audio hardware and drivers on Velocity and VelocityQ systems that account for the difference. It can even be different among the versions of software. For instance, on VelocityQ, version 8.2 is VERY different from version 9.1. They made major changes in how the software handles audio in version 9...so the boost may even be different in terms of how high to go with it.
Another question is...where are you hearing the distortion? Through playback on your PC? Playback on a DVD once the MPG2 files has been authored? If you're playing the mpg file back on your PC, you could have your windows sound master level turned all the way up in the sound settings and in the windows media player itself. That can also make a perfectly good sound file sound distorted.
Hope that helps
