Bret, are you saying that the 1-2 second delay before your DVD begins to play is also throwing your subtitles out-of-sync with the program by 1-2 seconds? That doesn't make any sense. When you build the disc in DVDSP, one of the processes that happens at that time is the multiplexing of the elementary streams into VOBS. Your MPEG-2 picture, your Dolby or PCM audio and your subtitles are all interleaved or "stuffed" into one file, the .vob file, which is what actually plays back on your DVD player. So it should not be possible for the player, whether DVD or Blu-ray, to slip the sync of the individual elements.

Players take varying amount of time to begin playing the content on the screen, and older Blu-ray players are notorious for taking a long time to begin playing a disc. But that does not affect the positioning in time of any of the program elements during playback.
