Ed MurphyTIFF based subtitles from DSP to YouTube
by on Oct 7, 2011 at 9:06:43 pm

An interesting project has been dropped on my lap, and I'm hoping one of your bright minds can assist me with it. This isn't REALLY a DVD Studio Pro issue, but I didn't see a better forum to post in.

I've been given the source material and the DSP project for a 1.5 hour documentary that's mostly in English, but also has subtitle streams for 7 other languages.

I have been asked to make each of these languages available with the whole film on YouTube. Even though I haven't subtitles on YouTube before, I would assume to just rip each stream using something like Subtitle Xtractor http://truevision-video.de/index.php?article_id=32&clang=1 and then some utility to convert .stl to .srt and apply those to the uploaded film. Viewers would then be able to chose the langue stream they wanted, I guess.

However, the subtitles were done as TIFF files rather than text (White back, blue letters, and red outlines for mapping in DSP) and there are almost 1000 of them in each of 7 languages. I do not imagine YouTube accepting 1000 TIFF files and a reference .stl to display these subtitles.
If anyone sees a solution for this, please enlighten me.

Less ideal but alternatively, I could upload 8 different versions of the film, each with the subtitles embedded into the video itself, even though it would be pretty sloppy in terms of link titles and keeping them all strait and in order.
But, if that is my only option at this point - can anyone suggest how I might best rip the DVD project or image or disc to embed the subtitles in the actual video? I haven't been able to find a tool or process for this. Everyone has tools for ripping subs into companion files, but not ONTO/INTO the video.

Any other ideas or solutions are very welcome. Thank you in advance to any contributors!!

Best regards,
Ed Murphy
