I'm not trying to be frustrating, I'm obviously at my wit's end with this problem and I'm trying to include as many details that come to mind, as I know is helpful as evidenced in my first post. Just ask if you need a particular detail, I'm trying here.

Yes, I've burned a disk from SP to the external. No problems. Did as you said and let toast make a copy by itself with ONLY the external drive. Also no problems. I guess that leads me to the internals as the answer? In your experience, are these symptoms of dying superdrives?
