Don't get confused, the smoothest jumps are with overlay menus.
You are creating layered menus, which are outside the DVD specs. But wait, you can make an overlay menu in your Photoshop method. Just mke the black on white layer a separate stand-alone flattened single layer, and use that as your overlay.ie you are making layers in PS for your background, just separate off the overlay.
