Drawing solid menu buttons w/ text

Hi!

I'm using DVDSP4. Is there any way NOT using shapes, that allows me to simply draw a button on a menu, that goes with solid color? In other words, the square I draw creates the actual button area, that has a color I specify.

On that button I then add button text.

The only way I have figured out is to use shapes, but those (if not using Apples own) has to be created in Photoshop or other graphic software. No time for that now.
