Luis DechtiarHow to override DVD player's subtitle setting
by on Sep 22, 2009 at 11:05:24 am

I am making a DVD with different subtitle streams and angles, with an angle for each language for certain parts where there is text on screen. Because of this, I have a Languages menu that activates a subtitle and corresponding angle at the same time. Like this:

English = Subtitle 1, Angle 1
Spanish = Subtitle 2, Angle 2
French = Subtitle 3, Angle 3

The problem is, some DVD players can be setup to default to a certain subtitle language, for example English. What happens with my DVD is this:

- Person chooses Spanish language
- They play the movie and see Spanish subtitles and Spanish angle (as intended)
- If they go to chapters menu and choose a certain chapter, the DVD player goes back to English subtitles. So they end up seeing English subtitles and Spanish angle.

So basically, I need to figure out how to override the DVD player's subtitle language setting. Any ideas?

I tried writing a script connected to the chapters menu, that basically checks SPRM 2 (subtitle set by user) and changes streams to that language before playing that chapter. However, the DVD player's language setting still prevails.

I know that SPRM 18 is supposed to be the DVD Player's subtitle setting. At which point does the DVD player check this value and change the subtitle stream accordingly? Is there a way to alter this value temporarily, or is that impossible with SPRMs?
