If this is only a one off then using the internal subtitle in DVD-SP is fine (and there us no real reason why they will be any better or worse than bringing in an external STL file). Wouldn't recommend it if you are doing a lot of subbing. But it us free! Alternative free offerings - have heard good things about Subtitle Workshop but it is PC only. But is free and can create STL to import in to DVD-SP. Don't think there are any mac alternatives that don't cost. One of best solutions if you are going to be doing a lot is Sublime.
As others say test your output on various tvs etc. Maybe set different subs with different settings to see which works for you. Subs look different on LCD/plasma sets than they do on CRT sets.
