I think it may be just that you have spaces between the commas that separate the subs. Thing to do is do a Save As and strip out mots of the subtitle file and just leave a few lines in and then take out those spaces and see if that imports...
AFAIK an STL is basically a text file anyway - I know I have opened STL files in Text Edit before and done a few corrections and it has been fine
