Simple question??

I have an enormous amount of video footage I need to convert to DVD. I have been recording them into FCP and then using compressor to make MPEG2's, then I use DVDStudio Pro to make a DVD. Unfortunately this takes a ton of time and none of these projects require any editing.
Here is my simple question. Is MPEG2 the only format that is used to write directly to a DVD? I am looking for a way to record MPEG2s on my Mac.
Any recommendations for the absolute fastest turn around to DVD would be helpful.
I am kinda leaning toward a stand alone DVD writer/burner, though putting in markers may be cumbersome....
Thanks!!
Gary
