Viewing letterbox in edit/display mode

We are trying to build two subtitle tracks, one for 16x9, the other for 16x9 letterbox for when the video plays on traditional TVs. How can we display letterbox in the viewer while we are working on the subtitles? When we choose 16x9, it displays 16x9. When we choose 16x9 letterbox, nothing changes. This is not in the simulator. This is in the viewer display while we are building subtitles. Our problem is we cannot see where to place the titles when in letterbox mode.
