Detecting 16:9 on tv or dvdplayer

Hi. I just got a complaint from a customer that our dvd did not promt their tv or dvd player to automatically detect the 16:9 format on the dvd. I have never had this before and in my experience you usually have to do these settings yourself on the tv. The dvd is made in 16:9 so that is obviously what I set it for but are there any scripts that I am not aware of to get tvs and dvdplayers to detect and change format settings automatically. If there indeed is such a script would this then be considered to be standard procedure.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Peter
