Hi Walter,
I think you would get better quality going directly from HD to SD Mpeg2. A friend who is distributing in XVID (on hard drives sent me this):
Interestingly, the low bitrate XVID transcodes mirror the quality of the source. If you transcode from HD, the image will be noticeably clearer.
